MAY 1 MUSICALE TO FEATURE BROADWAY FAVORITES AT HOME OF RICHARD AND PATRICIA SHOAPCHAMBERSBURG. The Cumberland Valley School of Music will present its fourth Musicale of the season, “There’s No Business Like Show Business” will be held on Saturday, May 1, 2004 at 7:00 PM in the home of Richard and Patricia Shoap, 3361 Carnoustie Drive, Chambersburg, PA. The Shoap name is closely associated with theater, and their recently enlarged home is a contemporary with an energetic, open flow. Their Yamaha Grand piano will be used to feature virtuoso pianist Brian Helman performing some favorite Broadway overtures, as well as accompanying soprano Marian Randall (from Chambersburg, PA) and tenor David McKinley (from Hagerstown, MD) who will be singing the best of musical theater. The diverse program will include songs from Broadway favorites including Guys and Dolls, The Sound of Music, The Secret Garden, Jesus Christ Superstar, and She Loves Me. Marion Randall is a former Merit Award winning student at CVSM. Both she and David McKinley are active in the local theatre scene and have appeared in several shows, including the Chambersburg Community Theater production of “The Secret Garden”. Pianist Brian Helman, who teaches at CVSM, received his Bachelors in Music degree from Shenandoah Conservatory. He has served as music director and accompanist for countless shows, classes, and auditions in New York City and throughout the Mid Atlantic region. Recent highlights include accompanying Tony Award Winning actress Gretha Boston at a CVSM Gala Concert and working with cabaret singer Joy Dewing at the famed Don’t Tell Mama’s in NY. Rooted in the European custom of Salon or Chamber concerts, the CVSM musicales feature gatherings of a small number of musicians performing together in private homes. They promote an intimacy for both performer and listener that is not available in a larger concert hall setting. Tickets are still available for two additional musicales to be held in 2004: “Old Time Country, Family Folk, and Coalmining Songs” will close the series on Sunday, June 13, 2004 at 3:00 PM, hosted by Penn National Golf Course Community at the Trellis Terrace, Clubhouse Drive, Fayetteville, PA. The beautiful pavilion is a perfect spot for a program featuring Jay Smar in a fascinating and historic performance of “old-time country music. Among his many performing credits, Smar recently appeared at the Philadelphia Folk Festival and recorded a number of songs for a BBC Documentary, “The Welch in America”. He sings, plays a variety of folk instruments, and clogs, so this will be a diverse and entertaining program. Tickets are $30 per person, and all proceeds go to help support the Cumberland Valley School of Music, a non-profit certified member of the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts teaching music and drama in Chambersburg, Waynesboro, and Mercersburg.
