Salt-Glazed Stoneware Canning Jar- by James M. Smith
– Bell Family Reproduction Series produced by the Nicodemus Center for Ceramic
Studies (10th annual piece), December 2009. The 2009 reproduction is
a lidded salt- glazed stoneware canning jar with cobalt blue tulip decorations.
The original stoneware is stamped JOHN BELL/WAYNESBORO on the shoulder and was
made in John Bell’s Waynesboro shop between the mid 1850s and 1880. The canning
jar is the first salt-glazed stoneware piece to be offered in the annual
reproduction series by the Nicodemus Center. The 150 jars and lids were fired
in a wood-fired salt kiln at Allison Severance’s Coles Pottery near Boonsboro,
MD – a $100 value
Framed map (about 6” x 8” unframed size) of Pennsylvania, ca. 1705-1810. (The seller claimed it was a Matthew Carey map, but that claim has not been substantiated. Carey (1760-1839) established a print shop in Philadelphia during the period of the American Revolution and published the first known American atlas.) – unframed, 35 ½ x 48 inches; donated anonymously.

Two views of a lawyer: one painted on wood and inset to appear framed reads; “Please don’t tell/my mother I’m a/lawyer./She think I play/piano at the/ bordello.” The other is a color photograph from a leaf of a 1608 manuscript commonplace book by Thomas Trevelyon held in the Folger Shakespeare Library: “The Lawyer” depicts a lawyer, beneath whom is a 6-line poem.
