2012 MERIT AWARD AUDITION

 

The Auditions will be divided into 3 divisions:  piano, voice, and instrumental.

“The Margaret Weeks Voice Award” to be presented to the 1st Place winner of the voice division.

Each student that auditions will receive copies of the judges’ evaluations.

The Benjamin A. Rhine Award will also be granted to a student who studies more than one instrument at CVSM.

 

Monday,  March 19, 2012 Applications due in CVSM office.      

                  Part I – Student application requires a parent or caregivers signature

                  Part II – Teacher recommendation.

 

Saturday, March 31 Auditions

      You will receive the exact audition time in the mail.  Approximate times are:

                        Piano auditions:  10:00 AM – 12:30 PM (Thomson Chapel)

                  Instrumental auditions:  12:00 PM – 2:30 PM (Room 36, Thomson Hall)

                  Voice auditions:  1:00 –4:00 PM (Thomson Chapel)

Featuring The Margaret Weeks Voice Scholarship winner along with the top three in each division, the Benjamin A. Rhine Award winner, and graduates going on to major in music or theatre.

Merit Scholarship Audition Policies

 

  1. Applicants should be prepared to perform two contrasting compositions.  Pianists and vocalists should have one piece memorized.  All material should be chosen to display the student’s strengths, both technically and musically.  You will not be penalized for using music on the second piece.  The student should prepare to play 6 or 7 minutes of music.  Works totaling more than 7 minutes may be prepared, although the judges may stop the student at an appropriate point.  Students will not be penalized for preparing longer works.
  2. The instrumental and piano student will be asked to play scales (2 Octaves).  Students should prepare the scales in the keys of the pieces they are performing.
  3. Applicants will be asked to sight read in the instrumental and piano divisions.
  4. The student will be expected to dress professionally. 

              Boys:  dress slacks, long sleeve shirt, tie, dark socks and shoes.  Sport coats or suits are          optional.

              Girls: dresses, skirts (not too short) or dressy pants, dress shoes.

  1. Auditions will normally be scheduled at 15 minute intervals.
  2. Vocalists and instrumentalists in consultation with their teachers should arrange for an accompanist.  It is appropriate to pay an accompanist for their time and skill.  Instrumentalists may perform unaccompanied if they desire.
  3. Parents or other guests will not be permitted in the audition room.
  4. The decision of the judges is final, and will be made known to all applicants through a letter immediately following the audition.  Up to three prizes will be awarded in each division. 
  5. Piano and Instrumental Awards-

              1st place piano and instrumental - $100 tuition waiver per semester for upcoming year.        2nd place piano, instrumental - $75 tuition waiver per semester for upcoming year

              3rd place piano, instrumental - $60 tuition waiver per semester for upcoming year

       Voice Awards-

1st Place “The Margaret Weeks Voice Award” winner will receive $250 tuition waiver per           semester and will be required to register for a 45 minute lesson for the upcoming year.

2nd Place Voice- $ 75 tuition waiver per semester for the upcoming year

3rd Place Voice-$ 60 tuition waiver per semester for the upcoming year

     The Benjamin A. Rhine Award – tuition waiver for ½ the cost of one instrument (½ hr lesson) per                semester, currently $144 per semester.

  1. Winners of the competition are expected to perform on the CVSM Awards Concert scheduled for Sunday, May 2 at 3:00 P.M.  If students have a legitimate conflict, please submit in writing the reason why you may be unable to perform in the concert.  A committee consisting of CVSM faculty and administration will review the request and determine if the student can be excused from the concert and still receive the award. 
  2. Winners are asked to participate in a fall student recital and participate in Performathon 2011.  Winners MAY be asked to represent CVSM as a performer at a community event. 
  3. Winners are asked to include the name of the award in bios or publicity throughout the community, i.e. school plays, Community Theater, newspaper articles, etc.  An example would be, “Winner of the CVSM 2010 - 2011 2nd place Piano Merit Award.  The 1st place voice award should read, “Winner of the CVSM 2010 – 2011  Margaret Weeks Voice Award.”
  4. Winners will be evaluated periodically.  It is expected that they will register for two full semesters for the upcoming academic year, attend regularly scheduled lessons, practice and demonstrate reasonable progress.
  5. If the winner does not meet obligations outlined in this contract, he/she will be considered in default and the prize will be given to the next ranked contestant.
