Performing in Support of Community Musical Arts Education The Cumberland Valley School of Music is presenting Performathon 2009 on Saturday, March 14, at three locations in Chambersburg. The Performathon is a marathon recital that celebrates the joy of making music, featuring hours of continuous performances by hundreds of CVSM students of all ages and abilities, as well as several CVSM faculty members. This year, the event will be held at two locations on the campus of Wilson College, Chambersburg, PA – Thomson Chapel and Allen Auditorium in Warfield Hall – as well as at the Chambersburg Mall (Exit #20 off I-81). Students will perform at all three location beginning at 9:00AM at Thomson Hall, and 10:00AM at Allen Auditorium and Chambersburg Mall, continuing until the last performer has played at around 2:00 pm. Admission to the Performathon is free and open to the public. Attendees can attend any of the three locations, at any time and stay as long as they like – for four minutes or four hours. CVSM students will sing or perform on a wide variety of instruments, including piano, guitar, brass instruments, woodwinds, and string instruments. In addition, the styles of music performed will cover the gamut from classical to musical theatre, rock to jazz, and with skill levels ranging from beginner to advanced. While many individual students will perform, the Performathon will also feature several ensembles, ranging from classical duets to the Cumberbunds youth chorus to Rock & Roll groups. Students participating in the Performathon are encouraged
to raise monetary pledges from friends, family, and community members in support
of the Cumberland Valley School of Music. Area businesses have contributed
prizes for the students who obtain the most pledges, and this year prizes
include a Nintendo Wii gaming system, a Tregan Electric or Bass Guitar, an I-Pod
Touch, a Nikon Coolpix digital camera, a Jasmine by Takamine Acoustic Guitar, 2 hours
recording time at M&M Recording Studio, season tickets to Totem Pole Playhouse,
numerous gift certificates to area stores and eateries, and much more. Hourly
door prizes will also be available for participants. “The Performathon is a celebration of music and the arts in our community, with students of all ages and abilities performing for the joy of it, and in support of their community school of music,” says CVSM executive director Andrew Sussman. “There’s never been a better time for making music and our students’ Performathon participation reminds us of the multitude of positive effects music can have on our lives – whether performer or audience member, amateur or professional, young or old. Music is part of the fabric of our lives and brings enjoyment to us all.” CVSM, which is in its 19th year of serving the Cumberland Valley, is a non-profit member of the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts with over 600 students and 55 highly qualified faculty members and locations in Chambersburg, Waynesboro, Mercersburg, and Hagerstown.
