2008-2009 The Cumberland Valley School of Music will present a special series of five musicales this year, each featuring a beautiful setting, good food, excellent company, and wonderful music. Rooted in the European custom of Salon or Chamber concerts, the CVSM musicales feature gatherings of a small number of musicians performing together in private homes. They promote an intimacy for both performer and listener that is not available in a larger concert hall setting. This season, four of the musicales will be presented on Sunday afternoons, and one unique event will take place on a Saturday. Tickets can be purchased for individual musicales, or at a discount for the entire series.
Amour et Printemps (Love and Spring) on Sunday, April 19 at 3:00 pm will be held at the lovely residence of Barry and Darlene Kline, 2528 Castlegreen Drive, Greencastle. A newer home, it also has beautiful views from its back windows and decks and provides a perfect setting to usher in spring. Classical guitarist Candice Mowbray and flutist Morgan Jenkins will perform from a 2nd story balcony overlooking the great room. An eclectic musician who holds degrees from the Peabody Conservatory and James Madison University, Ms. Jenkins has performed with many orchestras and bands over the years, including the “Pandean Wind Trio” and the rock/jazz quintet the “Holders”. Ms. Mowbray holds degrees from Shenandoah Conservatory and Shepherd College, is the author of “Guitar Notes,” a method book for group guitar instruction, and has been a featured performer at countless venues in the mid-Atlantic area.
Songs of Napoli on May 17 at 3:00 pm will be hosted by Hank and Jan Guarriello at their exquisite home at 373 Craig Road, Greencastle. This is one of the most extraordinarily beautiful homes in the area, and provides a perfect setting for a musicale. Hank Guarriello’s Italian heritage gives him a great passion for Neapolitan and other Italian songs, and he posses a beautiful lyric baritone voice which will be featured at this event. He will be joined by soprano Elisabeth Turchi, tenor Gerald Kowallis, and others.
The final musical of the season is something completely different! Neighborhood Chef’s Walk on Saturday, June 6 will start at 4:00 pm and last until 7:00 pm. Alexander Avenue in Chambersburg is an attractive street with some very pretty homes built in the 1950s and 60s, but it is the unique mix of people who lives there that make it special. There are several performing musicians, local politicians, restaurateurs, several longtime patrons of the arts, and FIVE culinary experts! Chefs Roger Tappen, Monica Kelso, Dave Munson, and Ron Macker, and restaurateur Tom Boock, have agreed to each do a Culinary booth along the street. Musicale attendees can stroll the street and sample each of their menus. At 6:00 pm everyone will gather in the backyard of Alexander Avenue resident and CVSM co-founder and program director Paula Hepfer’s home for a concert presented by CVSM Faculty and Friends. This promises to be a unique and exciting experience with great food and excellent music on a warm summer evening!
Tickets for musicales are $45 per person for individual musicales or $190 per person for the series of five, and includes refreshments. Advance reservations are required. All proceeds help support the Cumberland Valley School of Music, a non-profit member of the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts, teaching music and drama in Chambersburg, Waynesboro, and Mercersburg, PA and Hagerstown, MD.
