CVSM’S 2008-2009 MUSICALE SERIES TO START DECEMBER 7

The Cumberland Valley School of Music will present a special series of five musicales this year, each featuring a beautiful setting, good food, excellent company, and wonderful music.  Rooted in the European custom of Salon or Chamber concerts, the CVSM musicales feature gatherings of a small number of musicians performing together in private homes.  They promote an intimacy for both performer and listener that is not available in a larger concert hall setting.  This season, four of the musicales will be presented on Sunday afternoons, and one unique event will take place on a Saturday.  Tickets can be purchased for individual musicales, or at a discount for the entire series.

The first in the series is “Christmas with Corey” on Sunday, December 7 at 3:00 pm.  Hosted by Menno Haven Retirement Community, the musicale will be held in the beautiful new Grand Lobby at Northgate, 1500 Northfield Drive, Chambersburg, PA.  Decorated for the season, the lobby’s grand yet intimate, expansive floor plan boasts a two-story stone fire place and a brand new baby grand piano which make it a perfect choice for this holiday performance.

Corey Evan Rotz is well known for his beautiful voice and entertaining personality.  A Chambersburg native, Mr. Rotz is a renowned tenor with the Washington Opera were he has amassed over 350 performances of 29 principle roles during 13 consecutive seasons.  He recently made his New York City debut at Carnegie Hall.  He appears regularly with the world’s leading artists, including world famous tenor and Washington Opera General Director Placido Domingo. During the summer of 2002, Mr. Rotz joined the Washington Opera on tour in Japan singing the role of Cassio in Otello, opposite Placido Domingo in the title role. His frequent concert appearances have taken him from the East Room of the White House to the concert halls and cathedrals of Europe, and he has garnered impressive reviews from around the world.  Locally, he remains active in the arts community and has produced several concerts at the Capitol Theatre.  He will be accompanied by well known area pianist and CVSM faculty member Brian Helman.

The final musical of the season is something completely different!  Neighborhood Chef’s Walk on Saturday, June 6 will start at 4:00 pm and last until 7:00 pm.  Alexander Avenue in Chambersburg is an attractive street with some very pretty homes built in the 1950s and 60s, but it is the unique mix of people who lives there that make it special.  There are several performing musicians, local politicians, restaurateurs, several longtime patrons of the arts, and FOUR chefs!  Roger Tappen, Monica Kelso, Dave Munson, and Ron Macker have agreed to each do a Culinary booth along the street.  Musicale attendees can stroll the street and sample each of their menus.  At 6:00 pm everyone will gather in the backyard of Alexander Avenue resident and CVSM co-founder and program director Paula Hepfer’s home for a concert presented by CVSM Faculty and Friends.  This promises to be a unique and exciting experience with great food and excellent music.

Tickets for musicales are $45 per person for individual musicales or $190 per person for the series of five, and includes refreshments.  Advance reservations are required.  All proceeds help support the Cumberland Valley School of Music, a non-profit member of the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts, teaching music and drama in Chambersburg, Waynesboro, and Mercersburg, PA and Hagerstown, MD.
