Community String Orchestra to Perform on Tuesday, November 10, 2009
The CVSM Community String Orchestra will be presenting a concert on Tuesday, November 10th, at 8:00 PM at Thomson Alumnae Chapel, Wilson College, Chambersburg. Admission to the concert is free, although donations to the Cumberland Valley School of Music, a nonprofit community school of the arts, will be gratefully accepted. The orchestra includes musicians from all walks of life and all ages who enjoy playing challenging orchestral music. This ensemble is open to violin, viola, cello and string bass performers who are comfortable playing in the 3rd position (first violin to 5th) and would enjoy participating in an ensemble that requires a minimum time commitment. Fall concert rehearsals are on Tuesdays, October 13, 20, 27 and November 3rd from 7PM - 8:30PM at the Thomson Alumnae Chapel. Director Herman Hopple, former string instructor and director of the Chambersburg Area School District Symphony, holds a B.S. in Music Education from Susquehanna University and a Masters in Music Education from Penn State University. He has played upright bass with the Potomac Symphony and the Gettysburg College Community Orchestra and is currently principal bass and section leader with the Shippensburg College Community Orchestra. In addition, Herm is well known for his work on electric and upright bass with the groups Four Easy Pieces, the CVSM Jazz Quartet, and the CVSM Concert Jazz Band. He also teaches bass at CVSM, and was has received the Bravissimo Award for “outstanding service, dedication, and leadership in the arts”. The Cumberland Valley School of Music is a non-profit member of the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts, with over 600 students and 55 faculty members at locations in Chambersburg, Waynesboro, Mercersburg, and Hagerstown. The school offers individual instruction on all orchestral and band instruments as well as voice, piano, and guitar and offers a wide variety of classes, workshops, summer camps, and ensembles for students of all ages and abilities, from toddlers to adults.
