Cumberland Valley School of MusicCalendar of EventsFriday and Saturday, April 11 & 12, 7:30 PM – “ANYTHING GOES” – Cole Porter’s classic musical will be presented by the Goretti Players, with assistance from the Cumberland Valley School of Music, at HCC’s Kepler Theater. Packed with great Cole Porter standards such as “I Get a Kick Out of You,” “You’re the Top,” “De-Lovely,” and the famous title tune, the show features dancing and comic mischief. When stockbroker Billy Crocker stows away on a trans-Atlantic liner in pursuit of the girl of his dreams, he finds himself in the company of gangsters, showgirls, and society mavens. This madcap voyage on the high seas features assumed and mistaken identities, mismatched lovers, and nightclub singer Reno Sweeny, who can make the whole thing swing. But can she set everything to rights while pursuing her own love? Admission $10, students $7. Sunday, April 13, 3:00 PM – CVSM Musicale “Spring Serenade” will be held at the spacious and lovely Victorian home of Jerry and Anne Warren, 2279 Castlegreen Drive, Greencastle. This is the perfect setting for musicians to present a program of vocal chamber music scanning the periods through baroque to contemporary. CVSM faculty members Elisabeth Turchi, soprano, Erin Smith, mezzo soprano and trumpet and Valerie Merriman, piano will be joined by tenor Christyan Seay. The serenade from these talented (and charming) musicians and this lovely home will proclaim the arrival of Spring. Admission of $40 per person includes refreshments. Advance reservations are required. All proceeds benefit the non-profit Cumberland Valley School of Music. Thursday, April 24, 7:00 PM – Cumberbunds Concert featuring songs from “The Music Man” – Thomson Chapel, Wilson College. Featuring the CVSM children’s chorus, under the direction of Jeffrey Noll. FREE Sunday, April 27. 3:00 PM – CVSM Awards Concert – Thomson Chapel, Wilson College. This concert will feature some of the best young musical talent in the area, including Merit Award Winners who recently competed in categories of voice, piano, and instrumental music as well as graduating seniors who are going on to pursue careers in the performing arts. FREE. Friday, May 2, 8:00 PM – Kenny Barron Trio – Thomson Chapel, Wilson College. “One of the top jazz pianists in the world” – Los Angeles Times. Nine-time Grammy Award nominee, six time recipient of Best Pianist by the Jazz Journalists Association, multiple winner of jazz critics and readers polls including Downbeat and Jazz Times, inducted into the American Jazz Hall of Fame in 2005. Saturday, May 3, 6:00 PM – Italian Wine-Tasting Dinner and Auction – Beaver Creek Country Club, Hagerstown, MD. To benefit CVSM Performing Arts programs at St. Maria Goretti High School. This will be a special opportunity to learn from an expert importer about wines from various regions of Italy, while enjoying delicious creations from the chef at the Club. There will be a Live and Silent Auction to benefit our musical “Anything Goes” and all performing arts programs being provided by CVSM. Tickets are $50, or $35 without the wines. Sunday, May 4, 3:00 PM – CVSM-Goretti Musical Theatre Cabaret – Beaver Creek Country Club, Hagerstown, MD. Featuring students of St. Maria Goretti High School’s new Musical Theatre Class, under the direction of Kay Yaukey. Students will perform a selection of Broadway songs in a cabaret format. Admission $5. Friday, May 16, 7:00 PM – CVSM-St. Maria Goretti Student Performing Arts Concert. Featuring the CVSM-Goretti Choir, Dance Class, String Ensemble, and Jazz Ensemble. Beaver Creek Country Club, Hagerstown, MD. Admission $5. Sunday, May 18, 3:00 PM – CVSM Musicale “Tennessee Memories”. The final musicale of the season will be held at the beautiful home of Steve and Sharon Rost, 8900 Anthony Highway, Waynesboro. The Rosts refer to their new home as “The Roost” because it sits on top a beautiful hill overlooking the bucolic village and surroundings of Quincy. This lovely setting inspired the theme, as this home has a particularly interesting Tennessee memory. The Rost’s own an apartment grand piano formerly owned and played by Nashville music producer, Mr. Owen Bradley (1915 – 1998). Mr. Bradley was one of the most influential country music producers in history, producing such greats as Patsy Cline, Brenda Lee, and Loretta Lynn. The program will feature Brian Helman (piano), Scott Matllock (fiddle & vocals), and Laurie Matlock (guitar & vocals), who will be joined by our hostess, Sharon Rost, who performed as a singer and pianist in Nashville for many years before moving back to this area. This unique country inspired musicale is sure to be great fun! .Admission of $40 per person includes refreshments. Advance reservations are required. All proceeds benefit the non-profit Cumberland Valley School of Music. Monday, May 26, 7:30 PM – CVSM Community Symphonic Band Memorial Day Concert – Chambersburg Memorial Park Bandshell. Featuring a program of patriotic and concert band music. Made possible with support from Citicorp Credit Services. FREE. Saturday, July 19, 7:30 PM – CVSM Concert Jazz Band- Capitol Theatre, Chambersburg. Directed by David Wenerd, this 18-member big band is comprised of local professional and amateur musicians performing contemporary jazz. Made possible with support from McDonalds of Franklin County. YOUTH ARTS INITIATIVE – May 6, 7, 8, 9, 13, 14, 15, 16, 20, and 21 – in conjunction with the Capitol Theatre Center and Danza Antiqua, CVSM will conduct “A Day with the Arts” reaching out to students in Kindergarten, First, Second, and Third Grades in the Chambersburg Area School District. The theme this year is the life and times of Scott Joplin (1890-1917), a prominent African American musician influential in the Ragtime era. Each day, a group of approximately 100 students will participate in music, dance, and visual arts activities. While participation in the program is reserved for these CASD students, a short performance featuring students and instructors will take place each day in the Wood Center Theatre at the Capitol Theatre at 11:00 AM which is free and open to the public.
