CVSM PERFORMATHON & DRUMATHON TO FEATURE HUNDREDS OF STUDENTS IN MARATHON RECITAL ON MARCH 15
CHAMBERSBURG. The Cumberland Valley School of Music will present Performathon 2008 on Saturday, March 15, at three locations in Chambersburg, celebrating the joy of making music. The Performathon is a marathon recital, featuring hours of continuous music by hundreds of CVSM students of all ages and abilities, as well as several CVSM faculty members. This year, the event will be held at two locations on the campus of Wilson College, Chambersburg, PA – Thomson Chapel and Allen Auditorium in Warfield Hall as well as a new location in the Chambersburg Mall. Starting at 10:00 am, students will begin to perform at all three locations and will continue until the last one has played at around 2:00 pm or 3:00 pm. Admission to the Performathon is free and open to the public, and in these relaxed settings people can arrive at any time and stay as long as they like – for four minutes or four hours. Students will
either sing or perform on a wide variety of instruments, including piano,
guitar, brass instruments, woodwinds, and string instruments. In addition, the
styles of music performed will cover the gamut from classical to musical theatre
to rock to jazz, and skill levels will range from beginner to advanced. While
many individual students will perform, the Performathon will also feature
several groups, ranging from classical duets to the Cumberbunds youth chorus to
rock and roll groups. A new feature this year will be a Drumathon in Allen Auditorium. For this part of the event, CVSM drum instructor Edgar Myers will play non-stop for at least four hours. During that time, he will be joined by a wide variety of students and other CVSM teachers, including singers, guitarists, instrumentalists, and other drummers. Towards the end of the afternoon, Myers will be joined by the other members of his popular rock band Faze 3 (Mark Miller, guitar; Mike Miller, keyboards; Steve Reesner, bass; Curt Fetters, vocals). To participate in the Performathon, each student has received monetary pledges of support from the community. Many area businesses have contributed prizes for the students who obtain the most pledges for the school, and this year prizes include video gaming systems, an electronic piano keyboard, an i-Pod, an MP3 player, 2 hours recording time at M&M Recording Studio, a Karaoke CD Party Machine, tickets to Hershey Park and the Luhrs Center, gift certificates to Chambersburg Mall and TGIFriday’s and Gartenberg Jewelry, and much more. Hourly door prizes will also be available for participants. “The Performathon is a day to celebrate music and the arts through participation and education,” says CVSM executive director Andrew Sussman. “Watching students of all ages and abilities perform is an inspiring sight. It reminds us of the joy of making music, and reinforces the positive effect that music can have on the lives children and adults alike.” CVSM, which is in its 18th year of serving the Cumberland Valley, is a non-profit member of the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts with over 600 students and 53 highly qualified faculty members and locations in Chambersburg, Waynesboro, Mercersburg, and Hagerstown. In addition to offering a full range of private and group lessons, classes, workshops, and summer camps, the school sponsors the CVSM Community Symphonic Band, the CVSM Community String Orchestra, the Cumberbunds youth chorus, the CVSM Concert Jazz Band, and other ensembles and presents a wide range of concerts, workshops, and recitals throughout the year.
