CVSM AWARDS CONCERT ON SUNDAY, APRIL 27 at 3:00 PM The Cumberland Valley School of Music will be presenting the CVSM Awards Concert on Sunday, April 27, at 3:00 PM in Thomson Alumnae Chapel, Wilson College, Chambersburg, PA. The recital will feature the winners of CVSMs merit scholarship competition, which was held on April 5, as well as graduating seniors who are going on to pursue careers in music and the winners of this years Benjamin Rhine Scholarship. In the merit scholarship competition, students vied for awards in instrumental/piano and vocal categories. Evaluated by teams of impartial judges on such criteria as technique, tone, interpretation, stage presence, and sight-reading, the first three prizewinners in each category will perform. Winners this year are: Vocal Awards First Place: The Margaret Weeks Voice Scholarship Jessica Harney CVSM student of Paula Hepfer, is an 11th grade student at Chambersburg Area Senior High School, daughter of Kevin and Sara Harney, Chambersburg, PA. Second Place David Burkey CVSM student of Melanie Regan, a 10th grade student at North Hagerstown High School, son of Dan and Susan Burkey, Hagerstown, MD Third Place Mary McGinley CVSM student of Melanie Regan, is a 10th grade student at St. Maria Goretti High School, daughter of Michael and Susan McGinley, Hagerstown, MD Instrumental/Piano Awards First Place Kevin Gorman CVSM piano student of Brian Helman, is a 9th grade student at St. Maria Goretti High School, son of Tim and Barbara Gorman, Chambersburg, PA Second Place Monica Miller CVSM violin student of Deborah Stotelmyer, an 8th grade student at Shalom Christian Academy, daughter of Ray and Ginny Miller, Greencastle, PA Third Place TIE Austin Sungenis CVSM piano student of Brian Helman, an 8th grade home-schooled student, son of Robert and Maureen Sungenis, Greencastle, PA Ashley Wyrick CVSM clarinet student of Paul Grane, a 10th grade student at Chambersburg Area Senior High School, daughter of Cynthia Poe, Chambersburg, PA Also performing will be the winner of this years Benjamin A. Rhine Memorial Scholarship, which is awarded to a CVSM student who is studying and displaying aptitude on multiple instruments. This year there was a tie Gloria Showalter CVSM student of Roy Justice (voice) and Julia Emig (violin), she is a 10th grade home schooled student., daughter of Linden and Ruth Showalter, Waynesboro, PA Nicola Sussman CVSM student of Paula Hepfer (voice) and Deborah Stotelmyer (violin), she is an 11th grade student at St. Maria Goretti High School, daughter of Andrew and Sally Sussman, Waynesboro, PA In addition, CVSM will be honoring graduating seniors who are past merit scholars or are going on to pursue careers in music or the performing arts. Graduating Seniors who will be performing: Michael Dempsey will graduate from Shippensburg Senior High School, and plans to attend Dickenson College. He has studied piano with Brian Helman, and is the son of Paul and Rebecca Dempsey, Shippensburg, PA. Matthew Plotner will graduate from Chambersburg Area Senior High School, and plans to attend West Chester University as a double major in Music Education and Political Science. He has studied voice with Richard Overcash, and is the son of Terry and Michelle Plotner, Chambersburg, PA. Alexander Johnson will graduate from the Mason Dixon Home Schooling Association, and has not made a college decision yet. He has studied piano with Pamela Wert, and is the son of John and Kate Johnson, Mercersburg, PA. David Sanders will graduate from Chambersburg Area Senior High School, and plans to attend Ohio State University as a Music Education major. He has studied voice with Richard Overcash, tuba with Bernie Pitkin, and guitar with Geoffrey Weeks, and is the son of John and Linda Sanders, Chambersburg, PA. Gabrielle Sanfilippo will graduate from the Mason Dixon Home Schooling Association, and plans to attend Cedarville University. She has studied voice with Paula Hepfer, piano with Brian Helman, cello with Michael Cameron, flute with Carl Sponenberg, and violin with Tracy Ogden. She is the daughter of Diane Meketa, Marion, PA and Vince Sanfilippo. Greg Stoner will graduate from Shippensburg Senior High School, and has not made a college decision yet. He has studied saxophone with Paul Grane, bass with Herm Hopple, and piano with Diana Reinert, and is the son of John Stoner and Betsy Riep, Shippensburg, PA. Nicholas Sungenis is a home schooled student and plans on attending Shippensburg University. He has studied violin with Debbie Stotelmyer and is the son of Robert and Maureen Sungenis, Greencastle, PA. The Cumberland Valley School of Music is a non-profit member of the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts with over 600 students and 53 faculty members at three locations: Chambersburg, Waynesboro, Mercersburg, and Hagerstown.
