AN “AFTERNOON OF MUSIC” AT THE HISTORIC “ROSE BRAKE” HOME – JANUARY 6
The Cumberland Valley School of Music and St. Maria Goretti High School will present a musical program on Sunday, January 6, 2008, at 3:00 pm at the beautiful and historic home of Davitt and Kathryn McAteer, 4704 Kearneysville Pike, Shepherdstown, WV. The program will feature Morgan Jenkins (flute, piccolo and fife) and Marlin Barnes (percussion) performing historical music including some dating back to the 18th century. In addition, students Ethan Hawver (violin) and Phil Schoof (guitar) will perform; they are both seniors planning to major in music. Finally, in celebration of the 12th day of Christmas, there will be some additional surprises! This event will be catered by Frank Ganassa and "Sweet Petites" and requires advance registration of $35 per person. All funds will be used to support CVSM programs at Goretti. The menus will include: Roasted beef filet with borsin on soft rolls; seared diver scallops with orange/sesame glaze and potato rounds; pork medallions with sweet potato and chive; crab with capers and sesame crisps; antipasto platter; duck consomme demitasse; wild mushroom straddle; roasted pepper mousse with crispy bacon and endive; Chicken liver pate with brandy and green peppercorns; Chilled shrimp cocktail with mango dipping sauce. The McAteer home, named “Rose Brake”, dates back to the Revolutionary War era. The spring at the back of the property was the meeting place for the Bee Line March which occurred when congress commissioned regiments for the Continental Army. The Winchester regiment was to march to Cambridge, MA with the Shepherdstown group but they left early and the Shepherdstown group made a beeline for Boston to try and catch them. They also made a pact that 50 years later anyone of the group still living would meet at our home for dinner – three attended. It was also the home of the first ambassador to Denmark and remained in their family for quite a long time. Morgan Jenkins holds a masters degree from James Madison University, Bachelor of Music degree from the Peabody Conservatory of Music. She teaches for CVSM at Goretti and also teaches at Penn State Mont Alto, HCC, and Shippensburg University. Her performance experience includes numerous engagements as principal flutist and flute soloist with orchestras and chamber ensembles, as well as jazz and other musical styles. She currently performs with “Counterparts,” a flute/guitar duo, the “Pandean Wind Trio,” a flute/oboe/clarinet trio, and is a vocalist/saxophonist/flutist with the “Holders,” a pop/jazz quintet. Marlin Barnes performs with many area orchestras and concert bands as well as with Ritma-Cordia, a cello-marimba duo. He also does marimba programs for banquets, Civil War drumming, musical shows, and percussion demonstrations. Recently retired as the director of the string program at the Tuscarora School District, he received his degree from Indiana University of PA and teaches percussion for CVSM. Cumberland Valley School of Music has been providing music education at Goretti since the fall of 2006, but this year has seen a significant increase in the number of programs offered. CVSM teachers are currently teaching “for credit” choir, musical theater, dance and choreography classes, and innovative Introduction to Music classes where students learn firsthand from a wide range of professional musicians and music educators. In addition, there is an afterschool Jazz Ensemble, String Ensemble, Voice Class, and private lessons on several instruments. Founded in 1990, Cumberland Valley School of Music is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit member of the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts. With nearly 600 students and 53 highly qualified faculty members, CVSM teaches students at Wilson College and the Montessori Academy in Chambersburg, Mercersburg Academy, St. Andrew School and the Fairview Avenue Brethren in Christ Church in Waynesboro, all in PA, and St. Maria Goretti High School in Hagerstown, MD.
