CVSM’S 2007-2008 MUSICALE SERIES TO START OCTOBER 14

The Cumberland Valley School of Music will present a special series of five musicales this year, each featuring a beautiful setting, good food, excellent company, and wonderful music.  Rooted in the European custom of Salon or Chamber concerts, the CVSM musicales feature gatherings of a small number of musicians performing together in private homes.  They promote an intimacy for both performer and listener that is not available in a larger concert hall setting.  This season, all five of the musicales will be presented on Sunday afternoons at 3:00 pm.  Tickets can be purchased for individual musicales, or at a discount for the entire series.

The first in the series is “Oktoberfest” on Sunday, October 14 at 3:00 pm at the unique home of Larry and Barbara Lahr, 39 North Third St., Chambersburg.  Their four story, 6,000 square foot building is a former beer distributorship and barrel factory.  Inspired by the idea of the New York loft, the Lahrs purchased the building in 2003 and spent 18 months renovating the abandoned former warehouse, transforming it into a totally distinctive home which has been featured on Home & Garden Television’s “reZONED” show.  The result can be described as an imaginative mix of industrial style with modern furnishings, beautiful art, and impressive craftsmanship.

In honor of the home’s former life, the Lahr’s will host an Oktoberfest complete with a German Band in authentic costumes and beer, in addition to wine and non-alcoholic beverages.  “Little Blasmusik” (whose members also perform in Die Shippensburg Blaskspelle German Band) will perform traditional folk tunes (Voksmusik) from southern Germany and from Tyrol in Austria using genuine instrumentation typical of a small village band (two trumpets, two clarinets, one accordion, a tenorhorn, and tuba). (There was a wonderfully informative article about the Lahr's home, with photos, written by Emily Dolly with photos by Mahlon Yeager for Hagerstown Magazine.  To view this article click here)

Sunday, November 11 will feature Victorian Romance at the stately Joshua W. Sharpe House, 945 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg.  Hosted by Wilson College President, Lorna Duphiney Edmundson and husband Daniel, this beautiful home has been restored to Victorian Elegance.  The house with its elegant staircase, beautiful woodwork and floors and the floor length windows is stunning.  The program will feature Edward Stanley and David Erickson performing  19th Century Romantic Music for oboe and piano.

Home for the Holidays on Sunday, December 9 will feature the highly acclaimed Eaken Trio comprised of John Eaken (violin), Andrew Rammon (cello), and Gloria Whitney (piano) who will usher in the Christmas spirit with chamber music arrangements of holiday standards, many from their Grammy nominated CD of the same name.   Bill and Maxine Gindlesperger will host the musicale at their fabulous new home at 165 Highfield Lane North, Chambersburg.  This house surprises: while it lies within the Borough of Chambersburg, the expansive windows that overlook a wooded stream make you feel as though you are far removed from the busyness of town.   While the wood and stone make it feel “rustic” it is also contemporary and elegant.

Spring Serenade on Sunday, April 13, will be held at the spacious and lovely Victorian home of Jerry and Anne Warren, 2279 Castlegreen Drive, Greencastle.  This is the perfect setting for musicians to present a program of vocal chamber music scanning the periods through baroque to contemporary. CVSM faculty members Elisabeth Turchi, soprano, Erin Smith, mezzo soprano and trumpet and Valerie Merriman, piano will be joined by tenor Christyan Seay.  The serenade from these talented (and charming) musicians and this lovely home will proclaim the arrival of Spring!

The final musicale of the season, Tennessee Memories, will be held on Sunday, May 18, at the beautiful home of Steve and Sharon Rost, 8900 Anthony Highway, Waynesboro.  The Rosts refer to their new home as “The Roost” because it sits on top a beautiful hill overlooking the bucolic village and surroundings of Quincy.  This lovely setting inspired the theme, as this home has a particularly interesting Tennessee memory.  The Rost’s own an apartment grand piano formerly owned and played by Nashville music producer, Mr. Owen Bradley (1915 – 1998).   Mr. Bradley was one of the most influential country music producers in history, producing such greats as Patsy Cline, Brenda Lee, and Loretta Lynn.  The program will feature Brian Helman (piano), Scott Matllock (fiddle & vocals), and Laurie Matlock (guitar & vocals), who will be joined by our hostess, Sharon Rost, who performed as a singer and pianist in Nashville for many years before moving back to this area.  This unique country inspired musicale is sure to be great fun!

Tickets are $40 per person for individual musicales or $170 per person for the series of five, and includes refreshments.  Advance reservations are required.  All proceeds help support the Cumberland Valley School of Music, a non-profit member of the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts, teaching music and drama in Chambersburg, Waynesboro, and Mercersburg, PA and Hagerstown, MD.
