CVSM COMMUNITY STRING ORCHESTRA TO HOLD CONCERT ON THURSDAY, MARCH 27

The CVSM Community String Orchestra will be presenting a concert on Thursday, March 27, at 8:00 PM at Thomson Alumnae Chapel, Wilson College, Chambersburg.  Admission to the concert is free, although donations to the non-profit Cumberland Valley School of Music are gratefully accepted.

The orchestra includes musicians from all walks of life and of all ages who enjoy playing challenging orchestral music.

Under the guidance of conductor Herman Hopple, the orchestra’s diverse program will include arrangements of works by Mozart, Mendeslssohn, Grieg, Hofeldt, and Handel.  Violinist Cindy Scanzello will be a featured soloist on the first movement of Mozart’s Concerto No. 3 in G Major.  In addition, County Commissioner David Keller will make a special appearance leading the orchestra in a spirited rendition of Russian Sailors’ Dance, having won the right to lead the orchestra at a recent CVSM Dinner Dance Silent Auction.

Director Herman Hopple, former string instructor and director of the Chambersburg Area School District Symphony, holds a B.S. in Music Education from Susquehanna University and a Masters in Music Education from Penn State University.  He has played upright bass with the Potomac Symphony and the Gettysburg College Community Orchestra and is currently principal bass and section leader with the Shippensburg College Community Orchestra.  In addition, Herm is well known for his work on electric and upright bass with the groups Four Easy Pieces, the CVSM Jazz Quartet, and the CVSM Concert Jazz Band.  He also teaches bass at CVSM, and was has received the Bravissimo Award for “outstanding service, dedication, and leadership in the arts”.

The CVSM Community String Orchestra is still accepting new members.  The orchestra was created to allow busy people a chance to play challenging music, so the fall schedule calls for only four rehearsals and a concert.  Participation in the string orchestra is free of charge and open to all violin, viola, cello, and string bass musicians who are comfortable playing in 3rd position (first violin to 5th).  If you are interested, please call the CVSM office for more information.

The Cumberland Valley School of Music is a non-profit member of the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts, with nearly 600 students and 53 faculty members at locations in Chambersburg, Waynesboro, Mercersburg, and Hagerstown.  The school offers individual instruction on all orchestral and band instruments as well as voice, piano, and guitar and offers a wide variety of classes, workshops, summer camps, and ensembles for students of all ages, from toddlers to adults.  For more information, call the Cumberland Valley School of Music at (717)-261-1220.
