CVSM AWARDS CONCERT ON SUNDAY, APRIL 23 AT 3:00 PM
CHAMBERSBURG. The Cumberland Valley School of Music will be presenting the CVSM Awards Concert on Sunday, April 23, at 3:00 PM in Thomson Alumnae Chapel, Wilson College, Chambersburg, PA. The recital will feature the winners of CVSM’s merit scholarship competition, which was held on March 25, as well as graduating seniors who are going on to pursue careers in music and the winner of this year’s Benjamin Rhine Scholarship. In the merit scholarship competition, students vied for seven awards in piano, vocal, and instrumental categories. Evaluated by teams of impartial judges on such criteria as technique, tone, interpretation, stage presence, and sight-reading, the first three prizewinners in each category will perform. Winners this year are: Vocal Awards First Place – Kevin Miller – CVSM student of Richard Overcash and Roy Justice, is an 11th grade home schooled student, son of Rick and Julie Miller, 9246 Five Forks Road, Waynesboro, PA Second Place – Matthew Duffield – CVSM student of Richard Overcash and Roy Justice, an 11th grade student at Chambersburg Area Senior High School, son of Mike and Joan Duffield, 3848 Pampas Circle, Chambersburg, PA. Third Place – Matthew Plotner – CVSM student of Richard Overcash and Paula Hepfer, is a 10th grade student at Chambersburg Area Senior High School, son of Terry and Michaelle Plotner, 937 Blueberry Lane, Chambersburg, PA. Instrumental Awards First Place – Greg Stoner – CVSM saxophone student of Paul Grane, is a 10th grade student at Shippensburg Senior High School, son of John Stoner and Betsy Riep, 106 Hollar Ave., Shippensburg, PA. Second Place – Christa Hoover – CVSM violin student of Deborah Stotelmyer, an 11th grade student at Greencastle-Antrim Senior High School, daughter of Paul and Shirley Hoover, 405 Milnor Rd., Greencastle, PA Piano Awards First Place – Anita Hoover – CVSM student of M. Susan Matson, an 11th grade student at Greencastle-Antrim Senior High School, daughter of Paul and Shirley Hoover, 405 Milnor Rd., Greencastle, PA Second Place – Abigail Long – CVSM student of M. Susan Matson, a 10th grade home schooled student, daughter of Steve and Kathy Long, 327 W. Second St., Waynesboro, PA Also performing will be the winner of this year’s Benjamin A. Rhine Memorial Scholarship, which is awarded to a CVSM student who is studying and displaying aptitude on multiple instruments. This year’s recipient is Gabrielle Sanfilippo – CVSM student of Carl Sponenberg (flute), Tracy Ogden (violin), and Paula Hepfer (voice), a 10th grade home schooled student, daughter of Diane Meketa, 269 Colorado St., Marion, PA and Vince Sanfilippo, Greencastle, PA. In addition, CVSM will be honoring graduating seniors who are past merit scholars or are going on to pursue careers in music or the performing arts at this recital: Graduating Seniors who will be performing: Melissa Black, graduating senior. Melissa will graduate from Chambersburg Area Senior High School where she has performed with the Glee Club, Choristers, (as vocalist and piano accompanist) and Marching and Jazz Band (keyboard, trumpet and vocalist). She has been chosen to attend District Chorus (05, 06), Regional Chorus (05, 06) and State Chorus, (06) and served as piano accompanist for CASHS Drama Club productions. She has served as church soloist and accompanist for many years. Melissa will be a Music Education major with a vocal concentration at a college to be determined. She has studied voice with Richard Overcash and trumpet and piano with Gloria Kelly McCauley. She is the daughter of David and Jeanie Black. Daniel Lawson, Graduating senior. Daniel will graduate from Shalom Christian Academy where he participates in the Shalom Christian Academy Players and sings and serves as an accompanist with the Chorale. Daniel is the student conductor for choir and the school’s worship team. He serves as an accompanist for his church, previously for the Cumberbunds and CVSM Voice and Drama Camp and for voice students and instrumentalists. He is a student of Jeffrey Noll. Daniel will attend Houghton College in New York as Music major. He is the son of David and Lisa Lawson. The Cumberland Valley School of Music is a non-profit certified member of the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts with nearly 600 students and 53 faculty members at three locations: Chambersburg, Waynesboro, and Mercersburg Admission to the recital is free.
