FREE CONCERT AT CAPITOL THEATRE, SATURDAY, JULY 15 The CVSM Concert Jazz Band, under the direction of David Wenerd, will close out Celebrate the Arts Day with a special performance on Saturday, July 15 at 7:30 PM at the historic Capitol Theatre, 159 S. Main St., Chambersburg. Admission is free. Underwritten by a grant from McDonalds of Franklin County, the CVSM Concert Jazz Band features 18 area professional and amateur musicians performing challenging concert jazz arrangements (as opposed to dance music). Over the years, the band has opened concerts for some of the biggest names in jazz, including Phil Woods, Johnny Griffin, David “Fathead” Newman, Frank Wess, Joey DeFrancesco, Jerry Gonzalez and the Fort Apache Band, and Vanessa Rubin. The band’s repertoire includes arrangements of jazz classics, blues, standards, bossa novas, as well as some more contemporary songs including. Selections for this concert will include jazz arrangements of Richard Rodger’s “My Heart Stood Still,” the Beatles’ “Norwegian Wood,” Duke Ellington’s “In a Mellow Tone,” Chuck Mangione’s “Feels So Good,” Jerome Kern’s “Ol’ Man River,” Bobbt Darin’s “As Long as I’m Singing,” and Fred Rogers’ “Won’t You Be My Neighbor”. David Wenerd (director) has been conductor of the CVSM Concert Jazz Band and the CVSM Community Symphonic Band since its inception. In addition to his work for CVSM, Wenerd is chairman of the Chambersburg Area School District Music Department, director of the Towne Singers, and an active trombone player. Band Members include: trumpeters Harold Edwards, Bill Graham, James Minnix, Mark Wilson, and John Winsko; saxophonists Tim Gotwald, Craig Stahl, Ed Ewing, Jennifer Stouffer, and Jim Snively; trombonists Keith Davis, Lynn Lerew, Bill Nichols, and Eric Plum; pianist Andrew Sussman; guitarist Mark Miller; bassist Herm Hopple; and drummer Sam Hepfer.
