GRAMMY AWARD WINNING JAZZ LEGEND PHIL WOODS TO PERFORM APRIL 2

CHAMBERSBURG.  The Cumberland Valley School of Music will present the legendary Phil Woods Quintet in concert on Saturday, April 2, at 8:00 PM in Thomson Chapel, Wilson College, 1015 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, PA.

Internationally renowned, Phil Woods is one of the most highly acclaimed saxophonists in the history of jazz.  He headlines major jazz festivals and clubs around the world and has appeared on hundreds of recordings, including widely praised albums with Thelonious Monk, Benny Goodman, Dizzy Gillespie, Buddy Rich, Quincy Jones, Billy Joel, Oliver Nelson, Michel Legrand, Paul Simon, Carly Simon, Lena Horne, Bill Evans, Mel Torme, Aretha Franklin, Tito Puente, and Steely Dan, to name just a few of his credits.  Woods has been voted “Best Alto Saxophonist” in both the Readers Poll and Critics Poll of Downbeat Magazine nearly every year since 1975, has won four Grammy Awards and been nominated for many others, and was inducted into the American Jazz Hall of Fame in 1994.

Phil Woods’ current group has roots dating back to 1973, when bassist Steve Gilmore and drummer Bill Goodwin joined his band.  Both still perform with him today and will be with him for this concert.  The group also includes trumpeter Brian Lynch and pianist Alain Mallet.  The Woods quintet plays American standards and great jazz compositions as well as original material composed by members of the group.  The band treats audiences to the best in acoustic jazz, and has been voted best Acoustic Jazz Group in 10 different Downbeat Polls.

Made possible through grants from McDonalds of Franklin County, the Gilmore-Hoerner Endowment, and the PA Partners in the Arts, admission to the concert is $15 in advance, $18 at the door, $8 for students (K-12), and CVSM students are admitted free.  For more information or to purchase tickets, call the Cumberland Valley School of Music at (717)-261-1220.
