The Cumberland
Valley School of Music will be holding its 14th annual Gala Concert
on Sunday, November 2 at 3:00 PM in Thomson Chapel, Wilson College,
Chambersburg, PA. The concert will
highlight some of the best musical talent in the Cumberland Valley and covers a
wide variety of musical styles, from classical to musical theater to jazz to
folk music. Performers at the concert will include CVSM faculty,
alumni, award-winning students, and friends.
In the first half of the program, organist Wayne Mowrey and pianist
Jeffrey Noll will perform a stirring arrangement of “Let All Things Now
Living”; clarinetist Mike Hoover, flutist Suzanne Thierry, and pianist Valerie
Merriman will perform “Sarabande” by Arthur Foote and “Chorus no. 2” by
Villa-Lobos; Merit Award Winning pianists Jaime Wetzel and Lawra Gudgeon will
play a duet arrangement of Grieg’s “Peer Gynt Suite I”; violinist Leah
Beshore and pianist Julia Emig will perform a movement of Brahms’ “Violin
Sonata, op. 78”, and soprano Katie Bradley will sing two songs from musical
theater – “And This is My Beloved” (from Kismet) and “Art is
Calling for Me” (from The Enchantress). The second half of the program will feature soprano Paula Hepfer,
singing John Kander’s haunting setting of “A Letter from Sullivan Ballou,”
a poignant note from the Civil War. Dottie
Klein (flute), Terry Losee (violin), Mark Miller (guitar), and Geoffrey Weeks
(percussion) will perform two traditional Jewish wedding songs.
Soleil – a duo featuring singer-guitarists Tresa Paul and and
Laurie Matlock – will play two original compositions.
Corey Evan Rotz, a highly acclaimed tenor with the Washington Opera, will
perform the rousing crowd-pleaser “Granada”.
Closing the program, the 17-member CVSM Concert Jazz Band will perform
“Day by Day” and “The Git” (an exciting Count Basie arrangement
featuring drummer Edgar Myers). Aside from being a wonderfully entertaining musical
evening, the Gala Concert is Tickets for the concert can be purchased in advance for only $12 each, or will be available for $15 at the door. Students (K-12) are admitted for $8, and currently enrolled CVSM students are admitted free. Preferred seating Patron tickets are also available for $30 each.
