BAPTIST GOSPEL CHOIR OF WASHINGTON, DC TO APPEAR AT CELEBRATION OF AFRICAN
AMERICAN GOSPEL MUSIC JULY 17 CHAMBERSBURG.
The Cumberland Valley School of Music will present a Celebration of
African American Gospel Music on Saturday, July 17.
The event will feature two 3:00 PM workshops (one for adults and high
school students led by Thomas Tyler and one for children grades 3 – 9 led by
Russell “R.C.” Brown Sr.) at Central Presbyterian Church, 40 Lincoln Way
West (on the square), Chambersburg, and a 7:30 PM concert at the Capitol
Theatre, 159 S, Main St., Chambersburg. Admission
to both events is free, although donations to the non-profit CVSM will be
accepted.
The concert will feature the world renowned Shiloh Baptist Church Gospel
Choir from Washington, D.C. led by Thomas Tyler and the workshop choirs.
The Shiloh Baptist Church Gospel Choir has performed for CBS’
nationally televised Easter Service from Shiloh, PBS’ In Performance at the White House with Leontyne Price, NBC’s
annual Christmas in Washington, the
Dr. Martin Luther King National Birthday Celebration from the Kennedy Center,
the National Urban League’s Salute to
the Tuskegee Airmen, Ecumenical Services at the National Cathedral, and
more. Thomas Tyler is a nationally recognized choir
clinician and consultant. Prior to
joining the Shiloh Baptist Church, Mr. Tyler was director of Music Ministries at
the Metropolitan Baptist Church of Washington, D.C.
He has served as a consultant for the Howard University School of
Divinity conference on Music in the Black Church in the New Millenium and the
Urban Ministries Conference, and was Artistic Director of the 300-voice
internationally renowned Washington Performing Arts Children of the Gospel Choir
and the NAACP National Convention Choir. Russell “R.C.” Brown, Sr. is Director of Music at
Mount Jezreel Baptist Church, Silver Spring, MD. He is a native of Chambersburg and grew up in the John Wesley
AME Zion Church and the Mount Moriah Baptist Church.
Singers are sought to participate in the free 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM workshops
which will be held at the Central Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Tyler will lead the high-school/adult workshop and Russell “R.C.”
Brown, Sr. will lead the children’s workshop.
Under their direction, workshop participants will be taught 4 - 5 gospel
songs, which they will present at the evening concert.
First United Methodist Church, 225 S. Second St.,
Chambersburg, will provide an optional evening meal available to any
pre-registered participants for only $5. This event is made possible with generous support
