CVSM AWARDS CONCERT 
SUNDAY, APRIL 18 at 3:00 PM

The Cumberland Valley School of Music will be presenting the CVSM Awards Concert on Sunday, April 18, at 3:00 PM in Thomson Chapel, `Wilson College, Chambersburg, PA.  The recital will feature the winners of CVSM’s merit scholarship competition, which was held on April 3, as well as graduating seniors who are going on to pursue careers in music and the winner of this year’s Benjamin Rhine Scholarship.  In addition, this concert will mark the formal announcement of the new Henry and Janet Guarriello Scholarship Fund, which will assist graduating seniors with college tuition expenses. 

            In the merit scholarship competition, 38 students vied for 9 awards in piano, vocal, and instrumental categories.  Evaluated by teams of impartial judges on such criteria as technique, tone, interpretation, stage presence, and sight-reading, the first three prizewinners in each category will perform.  Winners this year are: 

            Vocal Awards

First Place – Melanie Emig – CVSM student of Erin Smith, an 11th grade student at Chambersburg Area Senior High School, daughter of Peter and Julia Emig, 48 Glen St., Chambersburg, PA 

Second Place – Mark Epstein – CVSM student of Richard Overcash, an 11th grade student at Chambersburg Area Senior High School, son of Norm and Pat Epstein, 1020 Leidig Drive, Chambersburg, PA 

Third Place – Kevin Padworski – CVSM student of Richard Overcash, an 11th grade student at Chambersburg Area Senior High School, son of Walt and Deb Padworski, 97 Salem Road, Chambersburg, PA  

Instrumental Awards

First Place – Melanie Emig – CVSM flute student of Tim Gotwald, a 11th grade student at Chambersburg Area Senior High School, daughter of Peter and Julie Emig, 48 Glen St., Chambersburg, PA 

Second Place – Christa Hoover – CVSM violin student of Deborah Stotelmyer, a 9th grade student at Greencastle-Antrim Senior High School, daughter of Paul and Shirley Hoover, 405 Minor Rd., Greencastle, PA 

Third Place – Samantha Jones – CVSM flute student of Suzanne Thierry, an 11th grade students at Chambersburg Area Senior High School, daughter of Robert and Diane Jones, 5045 Greenvillage Rd., Chambersburg, PA 

Piano Awards

First Place – Anna Showalter – CVSM student of Julia Emig, a 11th grade home schooled student, daughter of Linden and Ruth Showalter, 136 Clayton Ave., Waynesboro, PA 

Second Place – Daniel Lawson – CVSM student of Jeffrey Noll, a 10th grade student at Shalom Christian Academy, son of Dave and Lisa Lawson, 750 E. Catherine St., Chambersburg, PA 

Third Place – David Clark – CVSM student of Suzanne Thierry, a 10th grade home schooled student, son of Owen and Jeanne Clark, 47 Cherry Ave., Chambersburg, PA  

Also performing will be the winner of this year’s Benjamin A. Rhine Memorial Scholarship, which is awarded to a CVSM student who is studying and displaying aptitude on multiple instruments.  This year’s recipient is: Lena Risser – CVSM student of Margaret Weeks (voice), Dottie Klein (flute), and David Shearer (piano), an 11th grade home schooled student, daughter of Phil and Pam Risser, 12702 Williamsport Pike, Greencastle, PA.   

In addition, Jaime Wetzel, who is graduating from CASHS this year, will perform.  Jaime is a five time Merit Award Winner in the piano category who studies piano with Suzanne Thierry and voice with Suzanne Sweigart. 

            The Cumberland Valley School of Music is a non-profit certified member of the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts with nearly 600 students and 53 faculty members at three locations: Chambersburg, Waynesboro, and Mercersburg
