Guarriello Scholarship Awarded

The Henry and Janet Guarriello Scholarship Fund, a new endowment fund of The Franklin County Foundation administered by The Greater Harrisburg Foundation, has awarded two scholarships to assist students with college tuition expenses.   Mr. Brian Jay Padworski and Ms. Amanda Lea Sick, both recent graduates of Chambersburg Area High School, will each receive a $500 scholarship next fall.  Mr. Padworski plans to attend Geneva College and Ms. Sick will be going to Esther Boyer College of Music at Temple University.  Both award winners plan to pursue an occupation in music education.

The Henry and Janet Guarriello Scholarship Fund awards scholarships to graduating seniors who have studied at Cumberland Valley School of Music for four consecutive years, have been accepted into a college or conservatory to pursue a degree in music or the theater arts, and have demonstrated ability to be a successful candidate in their chosen field.   The scholarship is available for tuition, books and fees. Selection criteria also includes performance history, teacher recommendations, if the candidate studied more than one instrument at CVSM or was a Merit Scholarship Award winner, and financial need.

Brian Padworski was a five time CVSM Merit Scholarship Winner, where he studied saxophone with Paul Grane, voice with Richard Overcash, and had previously studied piano with Suzanne Thierry and R. Landis Heller.  At CASHS, he participated in the Marching, Concert, Pit, and Jazz bands and the Glee Club, Choristers and Esquires, serving as both vocalist and accompanist.  He was selected for County Band (9 – 12 grade), District VII (10 – 12) and Region V Band (12) and State Orchestra (12).  He is a member of the National Honor Society and was named to Who’s Who in American High School Students.  His parents are Walter and Deborah Padworski.

Amanda Sick was a three time Merit Scholarship Winner at CVSM and a recipient of the Benjamin Rhine Award (awarded to an outstanding student who studies multiple instruments).  At CVSM she studied flute with Dottie Klein and piano with M. Susan Matson.  Previously, she studied violin with Terry Losee and Greg Woodbridge.  At CASHS she participated in Band (secretary), Symphony (President), Glee Club & Choristers (Secretary), Steel Band, Symphonette, Pit Orchestra, and Bell Choir.  She was selected for County Band (four years) and Orchestra (three years), District Band (four years), District Orchestra (two years), Regional Band (three years), Regional Orchestra (one year), and All-State Band (one year).  She has also performed with the Harrisburg Youth Symphony, the Hagerstown Municipal Band, the CVSM Community Symphonic Band, and the WASHS Pit Orchestra.  Her parents are Paul and Greta Sick.

The Cumberland Valley School of Music is a non-profit, certified member of the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts, with over 500 students and 53 faculty members at three locations: Thomson Hall, Wilson College, Chambersburg; the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Waynesboro; and Boone Hall, Mercersburg Academy.  The school offers private lessons and classes for students of all ages, and scholarship assistance is available based on both merit and financial need.
